Spring Cleaning …. The Freezer

It was a cold morning, but lovely and clear all day so it seemed like a good day to take care of a chore I really don’t love to do – cleaning the freezer. On Saturday, Hubby and I stopped at the grocery store and found whole turkey breasts for 49 cents per pound. They were almost 90% off so we picked out 10 of them, brought them home and realized the freezer was pretty packed. There were, among other things, still several bags of ice from the nine day power outage in February. In addition, the ice had built up while the freezer’s temperature had dropped and refrozen so it seemed like a good day get it back into good shape.

First I removed all of the food, put most in coolers and the rest into boxes covered with heavy blankets to minimize temperature increases.

I used a putty knife, a wallpaper brush and a heat gun to remove all of the ice and wiped the interior down to remove the water and any grime.

Once the freezer was back in its place and running, I went through the food, organizing like items into bins which I finally labeled. A few items got tossed (like a weird seafood medley of unknown age) and a few items had to fit into the freezer of our garage refrigerator, but most of it fit back into the storage freezer.
